Mudlarks swoop to third win in a row in Great Southern Football

Myponga/Sellicks won their third game in a row to consolidate their spot in the top-five during round four action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) on Saturday. The Mudlarks travelled to the previously undefeated Encounter Bay and came away with a 35-point victory. Myponga/Sellicks kicked eight goals to four in the second half to turn an eight-point lead at halftime, into a 14.9 (93) to 9.4 (58) triumph. Hassan Ahmat-Watkins (4) and Ben Kennedy (3) were the multiple goalkickers for the Mudlarks, while Nick Marshall was a star for the Bays with six goals. Ben Kennedy, Elliot Chalmers, Delahay Miller, Anthony Kempster and Levi Proude were best for Myponga/Sellicks. For Encounter Bay, Marshall, Marcus Lippett, Cohen Pettitt, Lachlan Williams and Hamish Tonkin were their best players.


Mount Compass won their second game of the season with a comprehensive 70-point win over Langhorne Creek yesterday. ‘Compass’ won every quarter on their way to a 15.11 (101) to 4.7 (31) victory. Mount Compass had eight different goalkickers with Ziggy Vitkunas (4) and Tom Pinyon (3) leading the way. Alex Cleggett, Tasman Follett, Curtis Perrey and Malakai Kartinyeri were the goalkickers for the Hawks. Best players for Mount Compass were Sam Haniford, Adam Hunter, Bailey Hann, Klaus Simons and Ziggy Vitkunas. Scott Tonkin, Darcy Clifford and Matt Tonkin were among the best players for Langhorne Creek.


Strathalbyn also won their second game of 2022 with a hard-fought 18-point win against Victor Harbor at ‘Strath’. The Roosters led at every change before winning 12.13 (85) to 9.13 (67). Ben Simounds (4), Riley Clamp (2) and Cooper Machin (2) combined for eight Rooster goals, while Jaymes Hewett kicked two majors for ‘Victor’. Clamp, Mark Tucker, Xavier Redden, Richard O’Grady and Dylan Mason were named best for Strathalbyn. Among the best players for Victor Harbor were Jesse McKinnon, Heath Treloar and Zac Dowling.


McLaren continued their unbeaten start to the season with a huge 207-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot. McLaren had an incredible 60 scoring shots as they finished with 32.28 (220) to 2.1 (13). The Eagles had plenty of avenues to goal with 10 different goalkickers, led by James Grimley who kicked eight to give him 20 for the season. Cody Ellison and Matthew Merrett chimed in with four goals each for McLaren. Trent Griffen and Rory Hausser were the only goalkickers on a rough day for the Magpies. Ellison, Merrett, Brett Ellis, Luke Mitton and Tarak Redigolo were named best for a dominant Eagles outfit. Jaid Cooper, Charlie Steele and Frazer Hayward battled hard for the Magpies.


Reigning premier Willunga consolidated their spot in the top-five with a comfortable 110-point win at Yankalilla yesterday. The final scores were Willunga 20.18 (138) to Yankalilla 4.4 (28). Veteran Jake Standfield (5), Daniel Bass (3), Cam Hutchens (3) and Scott Hunt (2) were the multiple goalkickers for the Demons. Jack Fitzgerald kicked two goals for the Tigers, while Jesse Fitzgerald was named the Tigers' best player. Best players for Willunga included Darcy Scott, Brian Fenton, Myles Warmington, Job Colwell and Hutchens.
