Mudlarks win a thriller in Great Southern cricket

Myponga-Sellicks jumped into the top-six with a low-scoring two-run win over Victor Harbor during round 10 action in the Great Southern Cricket Association (GSCA) at Victor Harbor on Saturday. The Mudlarks batted first with new recruit Sam Tregenza the only batsman to pass 15 runs as he top scored with 34 from 38 balls (4 x 4’s) as they were bowled out for 98 in the 35th over. Lachlan Hywood (3/15), Kenny Sumner (2/20) and Luke Harding (2/29) were the multiple wicket takers for the Vipers. ‘Victor’ struggled in the run chase as they slipped to 5/45, before Harrison Medlen and Josh Boyko (19) added 36 for the sixth wicket to lift their side to within 18 runs of victory. Needing seven runs from the last over, bowled by Cam Turner, the Vipers could only make four runs as Harrison Medlen was run out from the last ball of the match for 30 (67 balls). Five Mudlarks bowlers took wickets including Ryan Banning (2/9) and Ryan Haverty (2/23), while Vinnie Nizzola was his usual frugal self with figures of 1/7 from his eight overs.

An unbeaten century from Aaron Smith has pushed Yankalilla to their fifth win of the season at home against McLaren Districts. Smith brought up his century from the final ball of the innings as the Tigers posted 2/209 from their 40 overs. Smith finished with 100 not out from 97 balls (10 x 4’s), while Lachlan Whittlesea (51) and Luke Bartlett (45) lent excellent support. McLaren Districts were in early trouble in the run chase at 4/46, before Daniel Bruce (36) and Daniel Petrucci (27) added 51 for the fifth wicket. However, the end came quickly once this partnership was broken with the Crushers bowled out for 128 in the 29th over. Trent Starke (4/22) and James Kerin (4/23) were the standout bowlers for Yankalilla, while Smith completed a good day with 2/18 (4.2).

Noarlunga remained top of the ladder after a 49-run win against Encounter Bay. The Shoes batted first and were in early trouble at 3/32, before Rohan Garrard and Jason Scarff added 83 runs for the fourth wicket before Garrard departed for 32 (53 balls). Scarff continued on to top score with 63 from 96 balls (7 x 4’s), while Matthew Spaan chipped in with a handy 25 (36 balls) as the Shoes finished with 7/180 from their 40 overs. Chris Butler (2/21) and Kieran Garrett (2/33) were the multiple wicket takers for Encounter Bay. The Bays reached 5/121 with five overs to go with Finn Magor (44 off 87) and Paul Fantasia (27 off 25) the leading run scorers, but Noarlunga took the last 5 wickets for just 10 runs as the Bays were bowled out for 131. Jamie Diener was the chief destroyer with 4/31 (7.3), while Jacob Banks (3/27) and Jason Scarff (2/18) were the other multiple wicket takers.

Goolwa kept the pressure on for a top-two spot after a comfortable 87-run over Mt Compass at Burgess Oval. The Magpies were led by ‘Burgess Oval Specialist’ Matt Overall who scored yet another ‘ton’ at the venue with 108 from 101 balls (13 x 4’s, 2 x 6’s), while Vic Robertson made 60 (71 balls) in a 120-run partnership with Overall. Goolwa posted an imposing 6/213 from their 40 overs. Mt Compass skipper Aaron Dalitz snared 3/24 (6) and Mark Nash took 2/36 (8) for the Bulls. Mt Compass struggled in the run chase with Aaron Dalitz (26) and Paul Barrett (23) the only batsmen to pass 20 as they were bowled out for 126. Six Goolwa bowlers took wickets with Tyron Rigney leading the way with 3/23 (5.5), while James Lawrence took 2/26 (8).

Port Elliot stayed second on the ladder with a five-wicket win against Willunga. The Demons batted first with Seb Carius (30) and Ramesh Antony (20) the top run scorers as their team was bowled out for 93. Port Elliot shared the wickets around with Scott Hannam (2/4), Simon Donaldson (2/15), Luke Collett (2/19) and Ethan Spriggs (2/29) leading the way.
