Myponga-Sellicks consolidated their position in the top-five with a nail-biting four-point win against reigning premier McLaren Districts during round 10 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at Myponga on Saturday. The game was tight all day with McLaren Districts holding a slender four-point lead at three quarter time. Buoyed by their home crowd, Myponga-Sellicks finished well, kicking three goals to two in the last quarter, to win 10.13 (73) to 10.9 (69). Darren Shillabeer kicked three goals for the Mudlarks, while Henry Mathews and Matthew Merrett kicked two goals each for the Eagles. Best players for Myponga-Sellicks were Ben Kennedy, Sam Kennedy, Connor Sampson, Mitchell Wilkins, Jack Cooper and Justin Whitford. The Eagles were best served by Ashley Goodieson, Henry Mathews, Merrett, Darcy Brown, Brett Ellis and Lachlan Mathews.
Encounter Bay moved up to second spot on the GSFL ladder after defeating Willunga by 16 points at Willunga yesterday. The first half was tight with the Bays holding a three-point lead at halftime. Four goals to one in the third quarter from the Bays saw them take a handy 22-point lead into the last quarter. Willunga battled hard in the final term, before Encounter Bay prevailed 11.8 (74) to 9.4 (58). Kyron Pepper kicked four goals for the Bays, while Tyson Hoffmann also kicked four majors for the Demons. Callum Tonkin was excellent in the ruck for the Bays and he was well supported by Pepper, Tyler Baldock, Marcus Lippett, Kyle Hayter and Oliver Price. Best for Willunga included Braden Altus, Hoffmann, Zac Dumesny, Jake Shirvington and Tom Messenger.
Langhorne Creek kept their top-three hopes alive with a big 171-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot yesterday. Langhorne Creek led by 68 points at halftime, before kicking 20 goals to three in the second half to win 33.15 (213) to 6.6 (42). Darcy Clifford kicked eight goals for the Hawks, while Caleb Howell (6), Jackson Dalitz (5), Henry Bruce (4) and Mitchell Cleggett (4) were other good contributors. Ken Angus kicked two goals for the Magpies. Best players for Langhorne Creek included Angus Cole, Clifford, Howell, Henry Bruce, Cleggett and Dalitz. Best for the Magpies included Ryan Carnelly, Logan Payne and Ryan Pearce.
Mt Compass won their third game of the season with a 33-point win at Yankalilla. ‘Compass’ led at every change to win 14.9 (93) to 9.6 (60). Tom Pinyon kicked five goals for the Bulldogs giving him 34 majors for the season, while Joel kay kicked three goals for the Tigers. Mt Compass’ best players were Will Zimmermann, Shannon Jones, Tom Vitkunas, Jayden Weetman, Pinyon and Lochie Nash. Yankalilla was best served by Jack Fitzgerald, Jesse Fitzgerald, Will Hogben, Kay, Sam Crawford and Tyler Athanasos.
Victor Harbor continued on their merry way with their 10th win on the trot, a 36-point win against Strathalbyn. The Roosters tried hard but ultimately the ‘Roos were too good, winning 16.11 (107) to 10.11 (71). Kane Cooper, Jesse McKinnon, Michael Ross (5 goals), Bryce Gibbs, Jackson Elmes and Heath Treloar were named best for ‘Victor’. Marc Elliott and Ben Simounds kicked three goals each for ‘Strath’, while their best players were Jacob Wright, Tay Crawford-Sandison, Elliott, Brock Keding, Jake Stafford and Mark Yeatman.
