NAIDOC celebrations on the Fleurieu

NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia each July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

Victor Harbor will see two special events to support celebration not only in Indigenous communities, but by Australians from all walks of life.

On Wednesday 30 June a NAIDOC town march will start at Grosvenor Gardens from 10.30am.

It will be followed by celebrations at Soldier's Memorial Gardens from 11am to 2pm.

Activities will include: Welcome to Country and Flag Raising, Smoking Ceremony, Aboriginal art activities for kids, nature play activities, face painting, bush food tasting, didgeridoo entertainment, and a free barbecue lunch.

On Wednesday 7 July Victa Cinema will screen a documentary on the life and work of David Gulpilil, Indigenous actor and icon of Australian cinema. All tickets are $12 for this one-off special screening.

Also on 7 July, Aldinga Library will host a children’s art workshop with local artist and Kokatha woman Micky Barlow.

Suitable for ages 8 to 15, the workshop will run from 10am to 12noon and costs $15 per child. Register via Eventbrite

NAIDOC originally stood for ‘National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee’. This committee was once responsible for organising national activities during NAIDOC Week and its acronym has since become the name of the week itself.

The 2021 theme is Heal Country, heal our nation, with a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities and to support the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community.
