National Reconciliation Week activities

National Reconciliation Week will be celebrated across the Fleurieu between 27 May and 3 June.

The Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation launched Australia’s first National Reconciliation Week in 1996 and it has been held annually since.

It is a time for Australians to learn about history, culture and achievements, while also exploring how everyone can contribute to achieving reconciliation.

The dates have always remained the same as they represent and commemorate two significant milestones in Australia’s reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision.

The theme for 2022 National Reconciliation Week is Be Brave. Make Change.

Two very different reconciliation events will be held on Saturday 28 May in Strathalbyn and Aldinga.

The Strathalbyn Aboriginal Action and Reference Group will hold a community celebration starting with a history talk at 9am at the Children's Bridge in Strathalbyn.

It will be followed by a fete at the Strath Neighbourhood Centre from 10am featuring art, music, food, crafts and displays.

All are welcome and entry is free.

In the City of Onkaparinga, Aldinga Library will host a weaving workshop from 10am to 11.30am, led by the Southern Elders Weaving Group.

The hands-on cultural experience will focus on traditional practices of basket weaving that have been passed down by Aboriginal Elders over centuries.

It costs $15 per person, which includes all materials and is suitable for ages 15+. Booking is essential, via Eventbrite.
