National Reconciliation Week in the south

Taking place annually from 27 May to 3 June, National Reconciliation Week commemorates two significant milestones – the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision.

It is a time for Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how everyone can contribute to ongoing reconciliation.

The theme for 2025 is Bridging Now to Next: reflecting the ongoing connection between past, present, and future, calling on all Australians to step forward together.

A series of events will be held during the week in support of the theme.

City of Onkaparinga will hold a free community open day at Rotary Park in Christies Beach on Tuesday 27 May.

The annual family friendly Reconciliation in the South event will feature a free barbecue and food, performances by local musicians, schools and a DJ, First Nations sports activities, art and craft activities and more than 20 local stallholders.

It will run from 10am to 2pm; find out more on the council website.

Victor Harbor library will host a free community event on Wednesday 29 May called Our Reciprocity with Country.

It will explore the deep connections between people and Country and spirit, through storytelling and shared knowledge. Register to attend online.

The Victa Cinema will also host Nunga Screen on Wednesday 29 May, with free sessions at 2pm and 7pm. Find the full program and book tickets on the cinema website.

The short film festival celebrates First Nations’ culture, stories and language; sharing stories of history, healing, belonging, community and connection to Country through scripted and unscripted documentary formats from First Nations filmmakers.
