A new default speed limit of 40km/h on beaches came into effect from Friday 1 December, which all drivers must observe.
The speed limit is reduced further to 25km/h when within 50 metres of a person, unless otherwise signposted.
The reduction of the default maximum speed limit from 100km/h comes following a review of speed limits on beaches earlier this year.
It brings the state’s beach speed restrictions, including on Kangaroo Island, into line with Goolwa Beach, where the limit was changed to 40km/h earlier this year.
Existing 10km/h speed limits for Moana, Aldinga and Sellicks beaches will remain unchanged.
Those caught speeding on a beach face fines up to $5,000 and risk accruing demerit points.
Following consultation with the community, councils, South Australia Police and other expert stakeholders the state government decided to reduce the default speed limit, increasing the safety of all beachgoers.
Eighty per cent of YourSAy survey respondents supported a reduced default speed limit.
Police Minister Joe Szakacs says there was clear support from South Australians to reduce the default speed limit.
“The reduced default speed limit will improve safety for everyone visiting drive-on beaches across SA.
“Everyone can feel safer at the beach knowing vehicles will be travelling at the reduced maximum speed.
“Penalties are now in place for any driver caught recklessly speeding on our beaches.”
