The Fleurieu Environment Centre and the District Council of Yankalilla have joined forces to provide special bins for the proper disposal of unwanted fishing tackle.
The ‘Hook Line & Thinker’ bins have been installed on the Normanville and Second Valley jetties and a third will soon be installed on Rapid Bay Jetty.
The bins can be used for the safe disposal of fishing materials such as old line, netting, sinkers, hooks and lures.
During summer the number of people fishing along the coastline increases.
Fishing litter is harmful and does not degrade, lasting up to 600 years in the environment.
To protect the unique and fragile environment on the Fleurieu Coast it is important that people fishing off local jetties take care to properly dispose of fishing tackle.
Volunteers from the Fleurieu Environment Centre will collect the deposits, record the type of waste collected and dispose of it correctly to ensure it doesn’t end up in the ocean.
This initiative has also been supported by Ocean Watch Australia, Green Adelaide and the District Council of Yankalilla’s single use plastic reduction program.
