New Senator for the Fleurieu

The youngest ever person elected to the Australian Senate, Charlotte Walker, has a strong Fleurieu connection.

The Australian Labor Party Senator elect, who grew up in Yankalilla and Normanville, turned 21 on election day – 3 May.

She went to school in Victor Harbor, at Investigator College, and went on to work part time in the electorate office of state MP for Mawson Leon Bignell.

The SA president of Young Labor was working for the Australian Services Union before the election.

A large swing to the ALP saw Ms Walker elected as its third Senator for South Australia, along with Karen Grogan and Marielle Smith.

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young and Liberals Alex Antic and Anne Rusdon were also re-elected. Liberal David Fawcett was not re-elected.

All six Australian states are represented by 12 Senators and the territories are represented by two each, with half elected every three years.

The Australian Electoral Commission finalised counting of Senate votes for SA on Monday 26 May.

Charlotte Walker’s six-year term will begin on 1 July.
