After four long years of intensive work, the Muwerang Mosaic Project has been installed on the Bay Road Barrier in Victor Harbor.
The 36-metre-long balustrade wall along the edge of the Muwerang (Inman River) now boasts a public mosaic art feature.
The project launched in 2019, but faced long delays due to COVID restrictions.
Artists Mike Tye and Cedric Varcoe led volunteer workshop sessions at the Victor Harbor Men’s Shed and Goolwa Community Centre to complete the mosaic.
It was funded by the City of Victor Harbor, assisted by a grant of $25,000 from Country Arts SA and a generous donation from local resident Jann Aldridge.
Community consultation on potential public art projects led to the choice of a large-scale mosaic piece depicting the Ngarrindjeri and Ramindjeri’s connection to Muwerang.
Ongoing consultation continued with local Ngarrindjeri elders and the Ramindjeri Heritage Association.
