NO excuse for war memorial vandalism

The Cross of Remembrance in Victor Harbor’s Soldier’s Memorial Gardens was vandalised over the weekend, the word NO painted in blue on both sides of the monument.

Discovered on the morning of Sunday 8 October, the vandalism has been quickly painted over.

RSL president Kent Johncock has described the act as disgraceful, saying on Facebook that the cross had only recently been freshly painted.

“The No Campaign has crossed the bloody line with this one - painted on both sides of our Cross of Sacrifice.

“No damn respect for anyone or anything,”

City of Victor Harbor mayor Moira Jenkins has also expressed her outrage at the act of vandalism.

“While council doesn’t have a formal position on the up and coming Voice referendum - this type of behaviour is definitely below the belt and will not be tolerated,” she wrote on Facebook.

“This is a community that is caring, respectful and peaceful, and I am beyond angry that this sacred monument has been defaced in such a way.”

The white stone cross commemorates those who died in service or were killed in action during World War II. It was first unveiled in 1953.
