Normanville SLSC demolition starts

Demolition of the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club and Kiosk has begun, the District Council of Yankalilla announced this week.

The works pave the way for construction of the new purpose-built Normanville Surf Life Saving clubrooms and a new café/ kiosk.

The council says the building project is a cornerstone of its Normanville Foreshore and Jetty Caravan Park Masterplan.

Chief Executive Officer Nathan Cunningham and Mayor Simon Rothwell witnessed the signing of construction contract with Partek Constructions on Thursday 6 October.

Demolition started this week with the Old Red Brick Co. clearing the site ready to handover to Partek Constructions in November.

“As CEO, I am delighted to be able to confirm that the rebuild of the Normanville SLSC and Café/ Kiosk is able to proceed; with funding allocated to the preferred tenderer,” Mr Cunningham says.

“It is great to have Partek Constructions on board to deliver this significant community facility as not only do they offer competitive pricing in this challenging building market, but they also have provided an immensely experienced team who have been responsible for the delivery of recent similar projects in sensitive environments along the South Australian coastline.”

He says John Kantilaftas of Surf Lifesaving SA brings project management strength to the project, bringing with him vast experience in administering similar rebuilds, having previously project managed the Chiton Rocks, Port Elliot and West Beach constructions.

The council first identified the need for an upgrade in 2015 it has worked collaboratively with the Normanville Surf Life Saving Club and Surf Life Saving SA to bring it to fruition.

The Commonwealth and state governments have provided grants to support elements of the overall Masterplan.

A recent Supreme Court action seeking delay or reconsideration of the project has been dismissed, making the timelines of the delivery phase now certain.

“Delivery of the overall Normanville Masterplan is a once in a generation opportunity and full credit goes to the Council and the community for pursuing change and uplift in this manner,” Mr Cunningham says.

Normanville SLSC President Dave Jansen says the club is thrilled that the redevelopment is about to start.

“We look forward to a modern facility to train our members in life saving skills and to provide our young education about water safety.

“As a club, our dedicated volunteers have worked tirelessly to save lives on this beach for nearly 25 years and support both visitors and the local community alike.

“The new facilities that the rebuild will provide means that we will be better equipped to serve the community and continue keeping beachgoers safe, for generations to come.”
