One arrested for copper theft

One man has been arrested and police are searching for a second man after recent copper thefts in the Hills Fleurieu area.

On two occasions between 11 and 13 December, heavy electric cabling and copper cabling was stolen from a mine site on Callington Road at Strathalbyn.

Following an investigation, on Monday 13 December, Hills Fleurieu police searched a property on Hindmarsh Island and located stolen copper and other items taken from the mine site.

Police arrested a 45-year-old Hindmarsh Island man and charged him with serious criminal trespass and theft.  He was granted police bail to appear in the Victor Harbor Magistrates Court on 7 February.

Police are searching for a second suspect they believe may have been involved in the copper theft and other offences in the area.

If anyone has any information that may assist the investigation please call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online www.crimestopperssa.com.au – you can remain anonymous.

Hills Fleurieu Police are active in the Strathalbyn area and the public are encouraged to report all crime on 131444.

Police would also like to remind businesses and home owners to consider the following practices to reduce copper and scrap metal theft:

* Key lock doors and windows.

* Install security lighting, fences and lock gates.

* Aim to have goods delivered and installed on the same day.

* Consider marking building materials (including copper piping) with microdot technology or spray paint to make them less attractive to thieves.

* Arrange for materials to be stored securely and out of general view.

* Use anti-theft brackets on fixtures such as hot water systems.

* Keep building sites tidy. Do not leave scrap metal on site.

* Consider using CCTV, covert patrols or private security.

* Contact neighbouring properties (including businesses) and encourage occupants to report suspicious behaviour.

* Be aware of people loitering or removing materials from properties.

* Be alert to vehicles near building sites or unoccupied properties that have obscured or missing number plates.

* Report all suspicious behaviour to the police assistance line on 131 444.
