Onkaparinga councillor resigns

City of Onkaparinga councillor Beau Cowan has resigned.

Beau announced his resignation on his Facebook page on 4 June.

The statement said: “Today I tendered my resignation as Councillor for the City of Onkaparinga, effective immediately”.

“This is due to unexpected changes to my personal circumstances that I feel have impacted my ability to fulfil the role to a high standard.

“I would like to thank the organisation, my fellow elected members, and the community for their ongoing support and understanding.”

In May, Beau revealed he was battling cancer. Cancerous growths had been discovered on his thyroid gland in late 2019. After having major surgery in January and a full thyroidectomy in February, further cancerous cells were discovered in his lymph nodes.

He shared that he was undergoing treatment for hypothyroidism and would be starting radio iodine treatment.

Onkaparinga mayor Erin Thompson shared Beau’s post on her Facebook page, saying, “Beau was one of the new councillors elected in 2018 and he brought with him new ideas and a passion to make real change in our city.”

“We know this would have been an incredibly tough decision for Beau, so on behalf of Council, I’d like to thank him for his contribution to our communities.

“We wish Beau and his family all the best for the future.”

Erin said the council was seeking advice from the Electoral Commission about when a supplementary election could take place to fill the vacant Mid Ward councillor position.

The Mid Coast ward covers the suburbs of Lonsdale, Reynella, O'Sullivan Beach, Christie Downs, Christies Beach, Noarlunga Downs, Port Noarlunga, Port Noarlunga South and Seaford Meadows.
