Open Day at Nangawooka Flora ReserveThe gazebo at Nangawooka Flora Reserve is a great spot for picnics.

A hidden gem at the edge of Victor Harbor will be on display for all to see on Sunday, December 8.

Over the past 37 years native plant enthusiasts have transformed five acres of cow paddocks into Nangawooka – a treasured reserve for native flora and fauna.

The reserve is lovingly maintained by The Friends of Nangawooka, a small but keen group of volunteers.

Together with the Australian Plant Society, they hold spring and autumn open days and plant sales to raise funds for planting and labelling.

Everyone is welcome to go along between 11am and 4pm to enjoy a sausage sizzle or afternoon tea and a happy wander around the winding pathways.

Keen gardeners can take along soil samples for testing and learn from grafting demonstrations.

Friends’ secretary Helen Williams says the reserve is spectacular in late winter and early spring.

“The Acacias are on display and filling the air with their scent.

“The Grevilleas are flowering and most of the Banksias have a wonderful array of buds and flowers.”

Other plants featured at this time of year include Hakeas, Hardenbergias, Correas and many flowering Eucalypts.

More than 60 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve, including a large population of Blue Wrens.

There are nesting boxes among the trees, a bird hide and bat boxes.

The main paths are wheelchair-friendly and the scented garden area has paved pathways for easy walking. The toilet on site is wheelchair accessible.

Nangawooka is located at the corner of Waterport and Adelaide roads, opposite Urumbirra Wildlife Park.
