Opening the door to nature on the Fleurieu Coast

Greater accessibility is a work in progress across the region, not least in enabling people with disabilities to enjoy the great outdoors.

The District Council of Yankalilla is calling for people to take part in its Opening the Door to Nature program, empowering wheelchair users to explore the environment.

The council says there is overwhelming evidence that spending extended time outdoors has enormous health and wellbeing benefits and everyone should be able to explore wild places together and enjoy the healing power of nature, regardless of ability.

It has partnered with other organisations to trial a pilot program to overcome the barriers for people with disabilities getting out into nature.

The program will include group excursions using eTrike assist all-terrain wheelchairs and free hire of MT Push wheelchairs for use on selected trails across the district.

There will also be a reference group to inform the project and help the council work to meet the needs of people with disabilities who live, work and visit the district.

The project goes beyond improving access to  outdoor activities, to reducing social exclusion caused by physical barriers.

For more information about the project, or to get involved as wheelchair user, buddy or a member of the local reference group contact Project Manager Lisa Pearson via email or phone 0419 704 912.
