Pictures of overflowing bins at Horseshoe Bay and other popular tourist areas have prompted Alexandrina Council to consider installing smart bins.

Residents of Port Elliot posted photos of bins surrounded by rubbish on a local Facebook group in January.

Extra bins were then installed at Commodore Reserve for the remainder of the holidays, as a result of a request by local councillor Bronwyn Lewis.

A lack of recycling bins in the area was also been raised as a concern.

On Monday night council unanimously voted to investigate the cost of installing smart bins in busy areas.

Smart bins have sensors embedded inside them to detect how full they are.

Council staff can then see how full the bins are and be alerted when they need emptying.

Yankalilla Council has already installed smart bins at Second Valley.

Councillor Lewis also moved that staff investigate the installation of dog waste bins after a successful trial at the Port Elliot Dog Park.

The use of these bins diverts dog faeces away from landfill.
