Pages Flat Road, Playford Hwy works to be fast-tracked

Planned works on the Pages Flat Road from Willunga to Myponga is one of thirteen road safety projects to be fast-tracked across the state this financial year.

The State and Federal governments will spend $1M to treat the road surface and install safety barriers and audio-tactile line markings.

Works on the Playford Highway between Bark Hut Road and Kingscote Airport on Kangaroo Island will also be brought forward for completion by June 2022.

$1M will be spent on the 12km stretch of highway to widen the lanes, improve markings, seal narrow shoulders and install barriers.

South Australian Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Corey Wingard said the projects earmarked for fast-tracking involved a range of shovel-ready upgrades that could be delivered quickly, to help save lives sooner at targeted high-priority locations across the state.

“Upgrades include delivering much-needed road widening, shoulder sealing, new barriers, rumble strips to alert drivers they are moving out of their lane and wide centre line treatments on high-risk roads across the state,” Minister Wingard said.

“Our governments are working hand in hand to make our roads safer, while supporting employment in regional communities, with this second round of funding set to support around 570 jobs over the life of the program of works.”

The Australian Government’s funding for the Road Safety Program is subject to ‘use it or lose it’ provisions and will deliver life-saving treatments on regional roads and protect vulnerable road users across South Australia, while also supporting local jobs and providing a welcome boost to local economies.

The ‘use it or lose it’ provisions require states and territories to use their notionally allocated funds within a timeframe, or the funds can be reallocated to projects in other jurisdictions.
