Party on Victor Harbor’s main street

Everyone is invited to Ocean Street on Friday, 4 October to celebrate the completion of Stage Two of the Victor Harbor Mainstreet Precinct Upgrade, which began in May.

Stage Two extends along Ocean Street from the Torrens Street entrance to just before the Coral Street intersection. The transformation involves new paving, feature lighting, garden beds, street furniture, landscaping, public art and drainage.

Council has described the upgrade as a vibrant, new public space that is a celebration of the Southern Right Whale. The street lights reflect the whale’s ribs; some of the seating and planting beds represent callosities, the calcified skin patches on the whales’ head; and the landscape and drainage features have been likened to the baleen plates of the whale that are used for filtering food.

Public art was a key part of the upgrade, with the sculpture Elemental by Fleurieu resident Karl Meyer making a statement at the entrance to Ocean Street.

Mayor Moira Jenkins said Stage Two had transformed the entrance to Victor Harbor’s Mainstreet Precinct.

“I would like to thank Mainstreet Traders for their support and patience during the works period. While the Council’s project team worked hard to minimise the impact on the Precinct, some disruption is inevitable with projects of this scale.

The City of Victor Harbor gained 50 per cent funding towards the $2 million project from the state government’s Places for People grant program.

The celebration street party will be held on Friday, 4 October from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. Ocean Street is set to be a hive of activity with street performers, entertainment, music, kids’ activities, food and market stalls.

The City of Victor Harbor has provided funding for the event, which is hosted by Business Victor Harbor in conjunction with Mainstreet Traders.

Planning is underway for Stage Three of the upgrade, which includes the eastern side of Coral Street, down to the foreshore.
