Peace pole proposed for the Vale

The Rotary Club of McLaren Vale wants to install a peace pole in Ellis Park, located on the corner of Main Road and Tatachilla Road at McLaren Vale.

The City of Onkaparinga is asking for public input on the peace pole, which would be funded by the rotary club.

The council says more than 200,000 peace poles have been placed around the world in almost 200 countries to symbolise a common wish for a world at peace.

The universal peace message, ‘May peace prevail on earth’, is written in different languages, on panels fixed to each side of the pole.

They are not memorials, but stand as a silent vigil for peace and a reminder to think and act in the spirit of peace.

The council will work with its Kaurna Advisory Group to ensure that Kaurna language is represented on the peace pole.

Rotary aims is to distribute 100 Peace Poles for 100 years of Rotary, sponsored by 100 Rotary Clubs.

Community consultation is open until 17 May via the YourSay website.
