The prestigious James Halliday Grenache Challenge has awarded the Penny’s Hill 2023 Single Vineyard Grenache the title of top wine for 2024. Judged in McLaren Vale earlier this month, the Challenge brought together 137 single-varietal Grenache wines from across Australia, highlighting the versatility and growing strength of this celebrated variety.
The McLaren Vale region stood out this year, with its wines dominating the top ranks. Penny’s Hill shone particularly bright, not only securing the first place but also earning fourth with its 2024 The Abstracts Grenache. This achievement underscores McLaren Vale's reputation as a powerhouse for premium Grenache production.
Chair of Judges Andrew Thomas praised the winning wine, describing it as “a beacon within its class,” citing its “vibrant red cherry fruit, delicate florals, and subtle complexity.” The wine’s balanced acidity and tannin structure set it apart as a “benchmark Grenache.”
Penny’s Hill Chief Winemaker Alexia Roberts expressed pride in the recognition, attributing the winery's success to the unique Blewitt Springs vineyard and the team’s meticulous approach to winemaking. She remarked that this win celebrates both the quality of the vineyard and McLaren Vale’s position at the forefront of Australian Grenache.
This award follows Penny’s Hill’s recent success at the 2024 McLaren Vale Wine Show, where the 2023 Single Vineyard Grenache was crowned Best Wine of Show. Alexia Roberts was also honoured as the 2024 McLaren Vale Bushing Monarch, further cementing the winery’s reputation.
Hosted by the McLaren Vale Grape Wine & Tourism Association, the annual James Halliday Grenache Challenge has been a vital platform since 2017, assessing and celebrating Grenache excellence across Australia.
