Petition launched for Aldinga Aquatic Centre

A group of Aldinga residents are petitioning the state government to set aside land for a future indoor aquatic facility for the town.

The Aquatic Centre Aldinga Bay – Action Group say they represent a growing group of residents, businesses and community groups from Aldinga who want an aquatic centre.

They want the government to set aside land within the 60ha Renewal SA proposed development site.

Their petition says Aldinga needs an indoor aquatic facility with lap hydrotherapy, and children’s pools as well as a gym, creche and café to support the growing region.

It calls on the Parliament to "work with all levels of government to provide adequate funding to support this important recreational and therapeutic infrastructure for the residents of Aldinga and the greater Fleurieu".

The Member for Mawson, Leon Bignell, has promised $150 000 for a planning study, if the Labor Party wins the March 19 state election.

The cost of constructing a facility has been put at about $25 – 30 million.

After decades of campaigning South Coast residents finally got an indoor pool and aquatic centre in 2017.

The Fleurieu Aquatic Centre in Victor Harbor was built after land for the site was donated by a local developer.

It cost $21M in total and was partly funded by a $7.5M grant from the Federal Government and $500 000 in funding from the State Government.

The Alexandrina and Victor Harbor councils both contributed $6.5M.
