Make a splash at the City of Victor Harbor’s 2023 Winter Whale Fest, with planning for one of the town’s most exciting festivals well underway.
The council has opened the doors for local businesses and community groups to join in the annual celebration and is seeking expressions of interest to be part of this year’s event.
The Winter Whale Fest is a month-long festival celebrating the arrival of the Southern Right Whales on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
It is an opportunity to share the passion that the local community has for the protection and preservation of its coastal landscapes and marine environment.
Organisations can join the celebration of whales by hosting a thought-provoking
marine or nature related activity as part of the festival.
Registered events will be promoted through the Winter Whale Fest website, social media and newsletter. There is no fee to register an event.
City of Victor Harbor Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins says the council is excited to be hosting the Winter Whale Fest again in 2023.
“This is growing into a great festival that people are starting to look forward to here in Victor Harbor, and the number of events taking place grows and grows each year,” she says.
“I’d like to see local businesses and organisations getting involved by hosting an event or activity.”
“Think social gatherings, art exhibitions, educational talks, guided tours, dining experiences, working bees, beach clean-ups and more!”
Council CEO Victoria MacKirdy says the festival had been flagged as a hallmark winter event in line with the council’s recently adopted Festivals and Events Strategy.
“We recognise the benefits of major events, and this festival aims to activate our city and boost the economy during what is typically a slow time of the year for local traders,” she says.
“We’re glad to have the South Australian Tourism Commission jump on board this year too, supporting the growing festival with grant funding.
“Businesses can get creative – our team is open to any new ideas that celebrate and educate our community and visitors about whales, ocean, marine life and the environment.”
