Police News on the Fleurieu

Major Crash Officers are investigating a fatal crash at McLaren Vale on Saturday night.

About 11.10pm, Saturday 19 October, police and SA Ambulance were called to Victor Harbor Road near the intersection of Seaview Road after reports two pedestrians had been struck by a car.

Sadly a woman aged 59 from Allenby Gardens died at the scene. A man also aged 59 from Allenby Gardens was taken to the Flinders Medical Centre with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of a Holden Utility, a 78-year-old man from Willunga, was taken to hospital with minor injuries and is assisting police with their investigation.

Anyone who may have seen a man and woman walking along Victor Harbor Road in the vicinity of Seaview Road around the time of the crash and has not yet spoken to police is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at www.crimestopperssa.com.au

The road toll now stands at 87 compared to 57 at the same time last year.

Police target mobile phone use

South Australian Police will this week target motorists who refuse to put their phone away behind the wheel during Operation Fatal Distraction.

Any motorist found using a handheld mobile phone, interacting with social media, or showing any other driver behaviour that can cause a lapse in concentration, will run the risk of being issued with an expiation notice during the statewide blitz.

When the operation last ran in August there were 483 expiation notices issued for distraction-based offences, including mobile phone use.

Superintendent Robert Gray, Officer in Charge of the Traffic Services Branch, hopes to see fewer drivers doing the wrong thing this time around.

“Research shows that using a mobile phone while driving increases the risk of crashing by at least four times,” he says.

“Distraction is one of the biggest killers of South Australian drivers, and yet there is still a section of our motoring community who are not listening to our warnings."
