An unlicensed driver was detected speeding on the Southern Expressway on Wednesday night, including at more than 100km/h over the speed limit on one stretch of road.

Just before 10pm on Wednesday 20 May, a Road Policing Tactical patrol was conducting speed detection duties on the Southern Expressway, Christie Downs and detected a Mercedes sedan travelling at 186 km/h in the 100km/h zone.

The same vehicle was then detected entering an 80km/h zone at an alleged speed of 205km/h.  The car exited the Expressway and slowed to normal speeds, but when a patrol tried to pull the Mercedes over, it sped off and was not pursued.

Enquiries with the registered owner revealed the car had recently been sold.

On Thursday 21 May, Road Policing Tactical patrols attended an Old Noarlunga address where the vehicle was being stored and arrested a 37-year-old man, who they allege was the driver of the car.

The Old Noarlunga man was charged with driving at a speed and in a manner dangerous to the public, driving unlicensed and disobeying a direction to stop.

When searched, it will be alleged officers found drug paraphernalia and a substance, suspected of being Fantasy.  The arrested man was further charged with possession of equipment for consumption of drugs and possession of a prohibited substance.

He was bailed to appear in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court on 23 June. The Mercedes was defected and impounded for 28 days.
