Police news on the Fleurieu

Here is a summary of the latest police and emergency services news on the Fleurieu and Kangaroo Island.

Update: Missing men safe and returned to Goolwa

The two men reported missing on board a boat in waters off South Australia have been reunited with family and friends.

About 10.20pm on Wednesday 9 September, the men on board the 30ft wooden hulled boat made contact with police by mobile phone.  Police worked with other rescue services overnight to determine the exact location of the boat.

Members of SAPOL's Water Operations Unit headed to their location launching from North Haven overnight, on-board the Investigator II, a 20-metre long range patrol vessel.

They found the missing boat just after 7.30am about 13 nautical miles off Meningie at the top of the Coorong.

Both men Tony Higgins and Derek Robinson, 57 and 48, were fit and well.

The wooden hulled boat was then towed by the Police Launch about 24 nautical miles to Granite Island, just off Victor Harbor, arriving at about 12.15pm.  While under tow the men's boat was taking on water and they were provided a bilge pump to remove some of the water.

Police Water Operations members inspected the vessel, locating an out of date Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon and out of date flares.  Police checks also revealed the boat operator wasn't the holder of an appropriate recreational boat licence.

The 57-year-old man was issued an 'on the spot' fine totalling $1,000 for insufficient safety equipment and no operators licence.

SAPOL wish to again thank everyone involved in the lengthy search, which started Sunday night and included the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, Royal Australian Air Force and Kangaroo Island and Coffin Bay Volunteer Marine Rescue.
