As South Australians prepare to take a winter break this long weekend, Police are calling for motorists to take responsibility for their own driving decisions  - for the safety of themselves, their families and other road users.

Operation Safe Long Weekend will run from Friday 11 June to Monday 14 June across the state, targeting drivers who flout Fatal 5 laws, ignoring the dangers on both metropolitan and regional roads.

Superintendent Bob Gray, Officer in Charge Traffic Services Branch is urging every South Australian to check their driving behavior this long weekend and take responsibly for their own decisions on the road.

"There is just no justification for taking unnecessary risks," Supt Gray says.

"Police will be taking a no-tolerance approach to blatantly dangerous behaviours like speeding, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seat belt and being distracted. But we can't make your safety decisions for you," Supt Gray warned.

"Take breaks if you're on a long trip. If its wet, windy or dark - drive to those conditions. Be patient and courteous - don't overtake unless you're 100% sure its safe.

If you're a pedestrian or a cyclist, don't take risks with crossing roads or riding on roads where you're vulnerable or unable to be seen.

We're asking every person to think twice before they take a risk on or around roads this weekend. We all have to take responsibility for avoiding road trauma, " he says.

Over the past 5 years, six lives have been lost and 43 serious injuries have been sustained on our roads during the June long weekend.
