Alexandrina Council contractors have this week started repairing the storm-damaged obelisk at Freeman’s Knob in Port Elliot.
The historic obelisk was struck by lightning during a violent storm on 11 December 2023, sustaining damage to the main structure and the flagpole.
A heritage-listed asset, the obelisk overlooking Port Elliot’s Horseshoe Bay was built as a navigation aid for shipping in 1852.
The council has advised that the repairs will take six to eight weeks to complete.
Contractors will cordon off the construction area with temporary fencing to ensure public safety while work is underway.
