Mayo MP Rebekha Sharkie will host a South Coast Positive Ageing Forum in Victor Harbor on Friday 16 July.
Guest speakers include Maggie Beer, Aged Care Nutrition Advocate; Ambassador; Ian Henschke, National Seniors Australia Chief Advocate; and Ian Yates, Chief Executive of COTA.
Rebekha says after a year of global change and as we face new changes in the delivery of our aged care services it is a time to bring the community together.
She has been advocating for a parliamentary committee to oversee the implementation of the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and the $17.7 billion in extra funding set aside for aged care in the Federal Budget.
She lodged a motion in parliament arguing the case for the oversight committee, which was debated with speakers from the crossbench, the opposition, and the government.
“My Centre Alliance colleague Senator Stirling Griff is looking to introduce a similar motion into the Senate, Rebekha says.
She has met with Prime Minister Scott Morrison to advocate for the committee and describes the meeting as constructive.
The positive ageing forum is one of two to be held in the Mayo electorate.
The other is in Mount Barker on Thursday 15 July and features Ita Buttrose, Dementia Australia Ambassador and Carolanne Barkla, Chief Executive of Aged Rights Advocacy Service.
The South Coast Positive Ageing Forum will be held at Investigator College from 9am to 12pm.
