Winter has begun and the State Emergency Service (SES) has urged South Australians to prepare their home to withstand the impacts of severe storms and localised flooding.
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting strong and gusty winds on Monday ahead of a cold front. These winds may be locally damaging and, given below average autumn rainfall, may result in areas of raised dust.
Showers will develop with the front on Monday and a period of cold, showery and windy weather will persist for Tuesday through to next Thursday, as a deep low pressure system develops to the east of the state.
SES State Duty Officer David O’Shannessy is encouraging all South Australians to make the most of fine weather conditions this weekend to spend a few hours preparing their properties.
“Simple steps, such as ensuring gutters and downpipes are free of leaf litter and other rubbish, will reduce the risk of water damage to homes and businesses,” Mr O’Shannessy says.
“People should check the condition of the roof of their property to ensure it is in good condition and organise for any damage to be fixed.
“It’s also a good time to trim back branches near your home and secure or put away anything that might become airborne, such as trampolines, outdoor furniture or garden tools.”
The SES advises South Australians to call 132 500 if they require assistance due to storm or flood-related damage. If the matter is life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000).
“Our volunteers are ready to respond and are available 24/7. However, we urge everyone to take steps to prepare for severe weather as we head into what is traditionally the busiest operational time of the year for the SES,” Mr O’Shannessy says.
During severe weather, the SES advises the following precautions:
· ensure loose items such as outdoor furniture, garden tools and children’s play equipment are put away or secured
· park vehicles under cover and well away from trees
· stay indoors and away from windows when weather conditions are severe
· never walk, ride or drive through floodwaters and don’t let children play in it
· shelter and secure pets and other animals
· check weather forecasts regularly and listen to local radio for updates.
