The Victor Harbor library is partnering with South Australia Police (SAPOL) to equip the community with knowledge about scams.
Representatives from Hills Fleurieu Police will visit the library at 2pm on Tuesday 5 September for a cyber crime prevention presentation.
The free session is a chance to learn tips for identifying common scams and reduce the chance of becoming a cyber crime victim.
Senior Constable Lucas Perry from SAPOL’s Hills Fleurieu Local Service Area says they are committed to working in partnership with the community to prevent crime and reduce the fear of crime.
“This is a chance to learn about your online safety, which includes various scam methodologies and prevention strategies.
“We’ll present information on how to identify red flags, what to look for in regard to phishing attempts and information on password security,” he says.
“By being smarter with your data, verifying the source or knowing how to spot scams you can help protect yourself from losing your identity, your reputation or your life savings.”
Every year, scams cost the Australian public hundreds of millions of dollars and cause serious emotional harm to victims and their families.
Bookings are essential either online or by contacting the library at 8551 0730.
City of Victor Harbor Chief Executive Officer Victoria MacKirdy says the presentation from SAPOL ties in with the library’s ongoing work to empower a technology-confident community.
“The Victor Harbor library is playing a key role in bridging the digital divide. In fact, in recent years, our library has grown into a gateway for acquiring digital skills,” she says.
“The team offers a wide range of services to our community, and our technology help sessions/events are in high demand.
“If you need some assistance using one of your devices, you can contact the library on 8551 0730 to organise a one-on-one session.”
“We want our community to feel safe and confident in the online environment, and there’s no problem with asking for help.”
