Endometriosis Australia Ambassadors and guest speakers will be supporting this year’s EndoMarch 2021 campaign to raise awareness of the disease that affects one in nine women by participating in the 2021 Endometriosis Australia Symposium.
Run by Endometriosis Australia, the Symposium will feature a soon to be announced panel of Endometriosis Australia Ambassadors who will provide insights about endometriosis from the perspective of Endo Warriors.
Members of Endometriosis Australia’s Clinical Advisory Committee Prof Jason Abbott, A/Prof Anusch Yazdani, Dr Danny Chou and Dr Erin Nesbitt-Hawes will be joined by guest speakers Dr Amani Harris and Dr Emma Readman to discuss hot topics including “Surgery for endometriosis and its extremes. Can it ever be too far?”
Individuals can join in from the comfort of their homes to raise funds for research and education whilst raising awareness of endometriosis.
Endometriosis is a common disease in which the tissue that is similar to the lining of the womb grows outside it in other parts of the body. 11.4% of women suffer with endometriosis at some point in their life with the disease often starting in teenagers.
Symptoms are variable and this may contribute to the 6.5-year delay in diagnosis.
Common symptoms include pelvic pain that puts life on hold around or during a woman’s period. It can damage fertility. Whilst endometriosis most often affects the reproductive organs, it is frequently found in the bowel and bladder and has been found in muscle, joints, the lungs and the brain.
Endometriosis is reported to cost Australian society $9.7 billion annually with two thirds of these costs attributed to loss in productivity with the remainder, approximately $2.5 billion being direct healthcare costs. Comparatively, diabetes costs about $1 billion annually in direct healthcare costs.
Endometriosis Australia is a nationally accredited charity that endeavors to increase recognition of endometriosis, provide endometriosis education programs, and provide funding for endometriosis research.
