Rapid Bay jetty to close for repairs

Ongoing maintenance work on Rapid Bay jetty will require a temporary closure next Wednesday and Thursday 3 and 4 September.

The works underway by Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) aim to improve the structural integrity and lifespan of the jetty.

This requires intermittent closures to ensure public safety while major works take place; next week’s closure will enable installation of new ladders.

The maintenance works are expected to be completed by the end of September.

District Council of Yankalilla CEO Nathan Cunningham has given an update on the state of other jetties in the region, following seasonal storm damage.

“The Normanville Jetty remains closed after suffering significant damage, including the loss of its final sections/bays.

“Engineering assessments have been completed and presented to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) as is required under the Council's Lease Agreement.”

Mr Cunningham acknowledges that the jetty has been closed for some time and that progress seems slow, but has assured the community that it is moving forward.

“The scale and complexity of the required repairs necessitate that every step be carefully planned and approved in partnership with DIT before the repairs can be contracted.

“There are also only a small number of appropriately skilled companies in South Australia who undertake jetty repairs and Normanville is one of nearly a dozen which has recently suffered damage. This could impact the timing or sequencing of the repairs.”

DIT has completed remedial works on Second Valley jetty, which has now reopened, although state Heritage approvals are still required for longer-term stonework repairs.
