Recognising the Fleurieu’s aged care workers Helen Curnow is a health care worker at ACH Group’s West Park residential care home who has worked there for more than 30 years.

Tomorrow, Saturday 7 August, is Aged Care Employee Day, which recognises those who work in the industry.

Leading aged care provider ACH Group employs more than 370 people across the Fleurieu, including Helen Curnow who has worked at its West Park residential aged care home in Goolwa for more than 30 years.

The community feel of West Park, opportunities to have various roles, and having support to study and complete qualifications is what Helen attributes to her long-standing career.

“There is a great social aspect of working at West Park and because we are in Goolwa there is a lovely community feeling,” she says.

Helen started her career at West Park as a cleaner. After completing her Certificate of Aged Care, she became a health care worker and she has also worked as a site clerk and lifestyle coordinator, organising social activities for the residents.

“At the moment I work in West Park’s cottages, supporting the needs of the residents throughout their day. It is nice to feel you are making a difference in someone’s life,” she says.

“Across the years I have created some great memories here. We have celebrated many big birthday milestones with residents and had great social outings.

“Because I have worked here so long the children of residents who lived at West Park when I first started are now residents themselves. You get to know families, that is a nice part of the job.”

ACH Group CEO Frank Weits says Aged Care Employee Day is an important day for all to acknowledge, especially after the last 18 months.

“Throughout COVID-19 aged care workers like Helen have been on the front line every day.

“They have done everything in their control to protect the health and safety of residents and customers, while supporting them to stay connected with their loved ones and live a good life,” he says.

“Our employees are the heart and soul of our organisation. I thank each one of them for their dedication and contribution.”

ACH Group will celebrate Aged Care Employee Day by delivering gifts to each of its 1800 employees.
