The focus of National Science Week 2024 is on the wonders of the dark night sky and the growing issue of light pollution. Running from August 10-18, the week-long celebration invites the Fleurieu Peninsula community to engage with science through various events and activities.
The ABC will shine a spotlight on how light pollution affects not only the view of the stars but also science, wildlife, and culture. For centuries, constellations have been woven into myths and legends, and the movements of celestial bodies have provided some of the first scientific clues about the Universe.
However, today’s sky isn’t what it once was; light pollution has obscured the Milky Way for an estimated third of humanity.
The good news is that light pollution is reversible. By using smarter, more appropriate lighting solutions, the night sky can be restored without plunging back into darkness.
Here’s how to get involved this National Science Week:
National Science Week is a perfect time for the Fleurieu Peninsula community to reconnect with the night sky. Whether you're a seasoned stargazer or just curious, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn from.
