Rego relief for KI and bush

The state government will reinstate the outer area car registration concession of 50 per cent from 1 July for Kangaroo Island and the outback.

The Outer Areas Registration Concession will be available for residents of Kangaroo Island, Coober Pedy, Roxby Downs and all other parts of South Australia that are not within a municipality, a district council area, or Iron Knob.

The concession will provide a 50 per cent reduction in the registration fee component for light vehicles and a 40 per cent reduction for heavy vehicles.

Light vehicles are less than or equal to 4.5 tonne gross mass.

Cut by previous government in 2020, the concession applies to the registration fee component and does not discount other components of car registration fees such as compulsory third party insurance or the emergency service levy.

Registered owners who live in these areas will be eligible to receive the concession provided the vehicle is to be used wholly or mainly in outer areas.

Mawson MP Leon Bignell says Kangaroo Island locals were left stunned when this concession was removed by the former government.

“We made a commitment to bring it back and we are delivering on our promise.

“The registration concession will deliver motoring and freight savings to individuals, farmers and businesses, with one freight company set to save $70,000 on annual registration bills.”

Outer Areas Registration Concession is not applicable to heavy vehicles that are Rigid Truck types 1 and 2 or Special Purpose Vehicles.

Applications for the concession can be made from 1 July 2022. For more information on the Outer Areas Registration Concession and to apply, visit the Service SA website
