Rehab centre proposed for Strathalbyn

A proposed drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre at Strathalbyn could be a step closer after the Fleurieu Regional Assessment Panel meets next week.

The Panel will meet on Tuesday to discuss an application made by Teen Challenge SA to enable land a property at 32 Dunreath Road in Strathalbyn to be used as a ‘training and support facility with associated accommodation’.

Teen Challenge run a ‘complete abstinence program’ for men over 18 who would live on the property for up to 12 months. The program helps people who have struggled with problems such as drug or alcohol abuse, anxiety or communication difficulties or domestic abuse and is voluntary.

The application has attracted 40 representations from locals, all opposed to the change of use for the land with some citing concerns that the facility could lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour and noise.  Thirteen residents have asked to speak at the meeting.

The 9-hectare site is next to the former Clipsal factory and was previously used as a conference centre. It was listed for sale for $3M earlier this year, on a walk in / walk out basis with McGees Property.

It is anticipated that an average of 25 persons will be on site at any one time (19 residents and six staff).   The Panel has noted however that the existing accommodation facilities on the site would allow for up to 50 people to stay there at a time.  The site also has two tennis courts, a gas-heated pool and spa and a golf driving range.

The meeting will take place at 11am, Tuesday 17 December at the Strathalbyn Football Club on Ashbourne Road.
