Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill on the board in the Southern Football League

Reigning premier Flagstaff Hill won their first game of the season with a hard-fought 14-point win at Christies Beach during round two action in the Southern Football League (SFL) on Saturday.  ‘Flaggies’ opened up a handy 30-point lead at halftime before Christies Beach came roaring back into the contest with five goals to one in the third term to trail by just four points at the last change. The Falcons steadied in the last quarter to eventually win 15.12 (102) to 13.10 (88). Daniel Butcher (6) and Nathan Beenham (4) combined to kick 10 goals for ‘Flaggies’, while Blake Carter kicked four goals for the Saints. Best players for Flagstaff Hill were Michael Shearer, Mitchell Johnson, Brayden Heyward-Ferors, Beenham and Nash Mitchell. Shaun King, Jonty Murphy, Lee Hoey, James Conlon and Korii Gebhardt were best for ‘Christies’. 


Reynella won their second game for the season with a come-from-behind 11-point win against Happy Valley at Reynella. The visitors started well to lead by 14 points at quarter time, and they extended their lead out to a handy 21 points by halftime. The Wine Flies turned the game around in the third term as they kicked six goals to two to take a slender four-point lead to the last change. A further four goals to three in the final term saw Reynella win 14.14 (98) to 13.9 (87). New recruit Marc Borholm was a star up forward for the home side with six goals in a best-on-ground performance. He was joined in the best players by James Smith, Bradley Thompson, Cameron McGree and Dylan Roser. Ben Geytenbeek kicked five goals for the Vikings while Dwayne Ruddock kicked three. Best players for Happy Valley included Ruddock, Lee Davis and Justin Schurgott.


Cove Cobras continued their unbeaten start to 2022 with a comprehensive 124-point victory at home against Port Noarlunga. The Cobras led by 51 points at quarter time, 55 points at halftime and 81 points at the last change, before winning 25.24 (174) to 6.14 (50). Cove had 11 different goalkickers with Jake McCreery slotting six majors in a best-on-ground performance. Joining McCreery in the best for Cove were Scott Grieve, Harrison Riddle, Aaron Wordsworth and Scott Abbott. Best for Port Noarlunga included Ashley Baxter, Jesse-Jay Vaughan and Alex McKay. 


The game between Noarlunga and Morphett Vale had to be abandoned due to the number of close contacts and some positive results to Covid 19 at the Noarlunga Football Club.


Aldinga had the bye.
