Reigning premier Langhorne Creek and McLaren Eagles winners in week one of Great Southern Football League finals

Three-time reigning premier Langhorne Creek flexed their considerable muscle on Saturday, and are now just one win away from a fourth consecutive Great Southern Football League (GSFL) Grand Final. They will play minor premier Willunga in the second semi-final at Myponga this Saturday following their 40-point win against Mount Compass in the Qualifying Final. Mount Compass started well to lead by eight points at quarter time before Langhorne Creek kicked three goals to one in the second quarter to lead by seven points at halftime. The second half was all the reigning premier, as the ‘Creeks’ kicked a further eight goals to three to win 15.11 (101) to 9.7 (61). Caleb Howell kicked five goals for the Hawks, while playing-coach James Sellar kicked three. Jordan Boots and Lewis Johnston kicked two goals each for the Bulldogs. Sellar, Howell, Shannon Jones, Jarrod Kellock, Ben Arbon and Tom Derham were named best players for the Hawks. Matthew Skrypek, Michael Corbett and Tom Vitkunas were among the best players for Mount Compass.

McLaren kept their premiership dreams alive with a comfortable 49-point Elimination Final win against Strathalbyn at Willunga on Sunday. The win sees McLaren move through to the first semi-final where they’ll face off against Mount Compass. The Eagles will go into the game full of confidence as they have beaten Mount Compass in both encounters this season and the game will be played on their home deck at McLaren Vale. On Sunday, McLaren put together a four-quarter performance as they led by 23 points at quarter time, 33 points at halftime and 40 points at the final change before winning 12.13 (85) to 4.12 (36). James Grimley kicked four goals for McLaren, while Sam Elliott kicked two majors for Strathalbyn. Mail Medallist Brett Ellis was named best on ground for the Eagles and he was well supported by Kiefver Zohar, Daniel Marr, Sam Bentley, Joel Chahla and Matthew Merrett. Ryan Clarke, Tom Redden and Jacob Wright were among the best players for the Roosters.
