Reigning premier McLaren Districts are through to the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) Grand Final after defeating Myponga-Sellicks by 20 points in the second semi-final yesterday at Encounter Bay. McLaren Districts led by 16 points at quarter time, before Myponga-Sellicks hit back in the second stanza to take a slender eight-point lead at halftime. The Eagles kicked two goals to one in the third term as scores were tied up at 52 points each at the last change. The Mudlarks were kicking to the scoring end, where 11 of the 15 goals had been kicked, and were confident of finishing strongly and being the first team into the Grand Final. The reigning premiers had other ideas as they bucked the scoring trend, kicking four goals to one in the final term, to win 11.13 (79) to 9.5 (59). Best players for the Eagles included Tom Fenoughty (in his 200th game), Max Gill, Sam Lawrie, Joel Vandeleur and Tarak Redigolo. Best for Myponga-Sellicks were Ben Kennedy, Sam Kennedy (3 goals), Elliot Chalmers, Levi Proude and Dylan Lang.
Willunga’s edge-of-the-seat finals campaign will last at least another week after the Demons defeated Victor Harbor by four points in the first semi-final at Goolwa today. Victor Harbor led by eight points at the last change, before Willunga kicked four goals to two in the final term to win 14.13 (97) to 14.9 (93). Job Colwell kicked five goals for Willunga, while Danny Juckers slotted four majors. Sam Basham kicked three goals for ‘Victor’. Best players for the Demons included Sam Renney, Jack Redden, Daniel Bass, Juckers and Nick Scanlan. Best for Victor Harbor were Dylan Kleinig, Matthew Wiese, Jesse McKinnon, Mitchell Brook and Zac Dowling. Willunga will now take on Myponga-Sellicks in the preliminary final at Mount Compass on Saturday for the right to challenge McLaren Districts in the Grand Final.
