Repairs have started at the old Rapid Bay Jetty and should be finished within two weeks.

However, a spokesperson from the Department of Infrastructure and Transport says the time frame is subject to weather and "possible changes to the scope of the work due to structural conditions and safety measures".

There is currently an exclusion zone around the jetty which the department says will be removed when further inspections have been carried out and the jetty is considered to be safe.

The Department has published the following Notice to Mariners stating that a delegate of the Infrastructure Minister instructs:

  1. That vessels and any other water traffic be prohibited from navigating beneath or within 15 metres on either side of the section of the ‘Old Rapid Bay Jetty’, Rapid Bay, South Australia, that commences at the yellow gate at the beginning of the Old Rapid Bay Jetty and extends seaward along the Old Rapid Bay Jetty for 306 metres (‘prohibited area’).
  2. That the prohibited area described in 1 above be closed to all persons and vessels until the area is deemed safe for navigation and this Ministerial Direction is withdrawn by further instrument in writing.
  3. That only persons and vessels that have the approval of the Minister, or delegate, be permitted to enter the prohibited area described in 1 above.

The jetty partially collapsed on January 10.

It has been closed since 2004 and has fallen into disrepair, with a large section missing in the middle.

The area is one of South Australia's most popular shore diving sites and is home to the beautiful Leafy Sea Dragon.
