Review of dog leash rules in Onkaparinga

Onkaparinga Council is reviewing dog on-leash and dog prohibited restrictions at 15 sites across the region and has asked the community to have a say.

The proposed changes would mean imposing restrictions in some areas that currently have none and varying restrictions in other areas.

They include wetlands; reserves and open spaces, and beaches and sand dunes.

The council says the review responds to feedback received during consultation of its Dog By-law in 2022 and addresses a key requirement of its Animal Management Plan.

The Fleurieu sites up for review are Hart Road wetland in Aldinga Beach; McLaren Flat wetland; a section of Port Noarlunga beach; and South Port sand dunes in Port Noarlunga.

Dogs are currently prohibited at all times at Hart Road Wetland and the council proposes to make it an on-leash area to allow access to nearby walking trails.

McLaren Flat wetlands and the South Port sand dunes have no current restrictions and the proposal is to make them on-leash areas at all times to better protect them.

Dogs are prohibited on Port Noarlunga Beach during the daylight saving period between 10am and 8pm and the proposed change would ban them at all times during daylight saving.

Full details of the proposed changes and how to provide feedback can be viewed on the Onkaparinga Your Say website.

Consultation is open until Sunday 31 March.
