Rex scraps KI flights

Rex will no longer provide flights to Kangaroo Island after June 30.

The airline made the announcement this afternoon.

It is also withdrawing services from Bathurst, Grafton, Lismore and Ballina, coinciding with the end of the Federal Government’s Regional Airline Support program.

Rex’s Deputy Chairman John Sharp says the announcement was made with a “really heavy heart" but that the action was taken to improve Rex’s financial performance

“Qantas’ well-publicised predatory actions on Rex’s regional routes have meant that Rex no longer has the ability to cross subsidise these marginal routes,” he said.

“It is unfortunate that these regional communities are the collateral damage of Qantas’ bullying and heartless behaviour.”

“This behaviour is all the more unconscionable after receiving over $2 billion in Federal bailouts over the past 2 years.”

The Member for Mayo, Rebekah Sharkie says she is disappointed by the news.

"As international borders continue to open and South Australia welcomes more overseas visitors, we need to be making access to Kangaroo Island easier, not harder," she said in a Facebook post.

"My office will be working with Sealink and Qantas to ensure Kangaroo Islanders get the service they deserve."
