The City of Onkaparinga has identified 21 intersections in the McLaren Vale region that require safety improvements and is seeking input from road users on choosing the best solutions.

This follows the council’s intersection audit in 2021, which noted locations and proposed treatment and timing of remedies. All 21 intersections have been delineated on a map.

The state government is working collaboratively with the council to honour a $4.2 million election commitment to improve local road safety.

Responsibility for roads in the area is shared between the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) and the City of Onkaparinga.

Generally, DIT looks after main roads while the council takes care of adjoining local roads. They are considering a range of options to address the safety risks at the 21 intersections.

These include:

The highest-risk site identified was the intersection of Chalk Hill Road, Olivers Road and Field Street.

A compact roundabout, the first of its kind to be investigated in South Australia, is being considered for this intersection. It is considered likely to be less costly to build than a conventional roundabout due to its smaller footprint.

Residents and road users are being asked to contribute their local knowledge to the decisions about which road safety solutions should be applied to which intersections.

Full details of the intersections, proposed safety remedies and how to have input can be found on the council’s YourSay webpage.

The chosen designs are expected to be completed in 2023, with upgrades anticipated to be completed by June 2024.
