Roosters finally crowing in Great Southern Football

Strathalbyn won their first game of the season after defeating Yankalilla in a thriller by one point during round 10 action in the Great Southern Football League (GSFL) at Yankalilla yesterday. The game was tight throughout with the Roosters leading by six points at quarter time, four points at halftime and one point at the final change before winning 10.10 (70) to 9.15 (69). Jack Wheaton (3) and Phoenix Keatley (2) were the multiple goalkickers for Strathalbyn, while Joe Tyllis kicked four goals for Yankalilla. Best players for a jubilant ‘Strath’ side included Liam Newton, Daniel Pegler, Jordan Kenny, Thomas Welk, Jacob Wright and Fletcher Duffield. Yankalilla was best served by Tyllis, Jacob Parsons, Michael Thompson, Jesse Fitzgerald, Patrick Chay and Cameron Ker.


Langhorne Creek won their third game of the season after defeating Mt Compass by 10 points yesterday. The Hawks led at every change before winning 13.10 (88) to 11.12 (78). Liam Stirling, Jack Hall, Mitch Cleggett, Henry Bruce and Lachlan Bates kicked two goals each for Langhorne Creek, while Tom Pinyon kicked three majors for the Bulldogs. Best players for Langhorne Creek included Henry Bruce, Mitchell Cleggett, Tom Derham, Harry Cates, Lachlan Bates and Tasman Follett, while best for Mt Compass were Klaus Simons, Nathan Schulz, Hugh Daniell, Will Zimmermann, Tom Vitkunas and Lochie Nash. 


Victor Harbor stayed top of the ladder after a 49-point win against Goolwa/Port Elliot at Goolwa yesterday. ‘Victor’ led by 21 points at halftime, before kicking a further eight goals to five in the second half to win 14.15 (99) to 7.8 (50). Sam Basham and Harry Vincent kicked three goals each for the ‘Roos, while Jayden Davis and Ryan Carnelly kicked two goals apiece for the Magpies. Jaidan Kappler was best-on-ground for Victor Harbor and he was well supported by Sam Overall, Zac Dowling, Harry Vincent, Heath Treloar and Matthew Wiese. Best for the Magpies were Carnelly, Davis, Fred Nissen, Kai Iwao, Jye Bottroff and Levi Baillie.



Willunga won their seventh game in a row following their 31-point win at Encounter Bay. Scores were level at three-quarter time and a tight finish appeared on the cards. Willunga had other ideas as they kicked six goals to one in the last term to win 13.4 (82) to 7.9 (51). Daniel Nobes kicked five majors for the Demons, while Ben Davis slotted two majors for the Bays. Hugo Hoeck was named best for the Demons with support from Jake Shirvington, Brett Miegel, Tyson Hoffmann, Sam Renney and Nobes. Best for Encounter Bay included Jackson Savage, Callum Tonkin, Ambrose Willoughby, James Brown, Maxi Collins and Andrew Fyfe.


McLaren Districts consolidated their spot in the top-three with a 21-point win over reigning premier Myponga-Sellicks at McLaren Vale. The Eagles led at every change before winning 15.10 (100) to 12.7 (79). Connor Fitt kicked seven goals for McLaren Districts in best-on-ground performance. Mudlarks playing-coach Darren Shillabeer kicked three goals for his side. Joining Fitt in the best players for the Eagles were Lachlan Camm, Jackson Daniels, Brett Ellis, Daniel Marr and Matthew Raitt. The Mudlarks were best served by Jack Cooper, Mitch Wilkins, Hayden Sampson, Jakob Drury, Anthony Kempster and Shillabeer.
