The SA Country Football Championships were held in the Barossa Valley on the weekend with players from six zones throughout the state competing to be crowned the best in country footy. The Southern zone was represented by players from the Southern Football League (SFL) and the Great Southern Football League (GSFL), with both the women’s and men’s teams finishing third overall after defeating South-East in the third v fourth playoff games.

Kiahni Russell (McLaren Districts), Skye Kartinyeri Sumner (Victor Harbor), Jaimi Griffen (Yankalilla/Encounter Bay), Emma Fitzpatrick (Willunga), Katrice Turner (Willunga) and Georgia Weatherspoon (Yankalilla/Encounter Bay) from Southern Women were recognised with selection in the team of the carnival side. Five players from the Southern Men’s team also made the team of the carnival lineup. They were Callum Tonkin (Encounter Bay), Sam Renney (Willunga), Riley Clamp (Strathalbyn), Troy Blackwell (Langhorne Creek) and Shannon Jones (Langhorne Creek).

Central won a thrilling women’s final by three points over Eastern, while the Eastern Men turned the tables on Central as they defeated them by 53 points in the final.
