Southern Districts Stingrays have been very busy in the ‘off-season’ with several key appointments and some excellent recruits that will call Bice Oval home for 2019/20. In a huge coup for the Stingrays, former West Indies international, Carl Hooper, has been appointed High Performance Coach. Hooper played 102 tests and 227 one-day internationals for the Windies and he will bring a wealth of experience to Southern Districts.

The club has brought in some quality recruits including Sunam Gautam from Greenvale Cricket Club in the Victorian Premier League. Gautam was named in the Victorian Premier League team of the year. They have also secured the signature of Worcestershire County Cricket Club ‘keeper-batsman Ben Cox. The Stingrays will also have access to Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy players from the West Indies and the United Kingdom.

“We are approaching the 2019/20 season filled with excitement due to a number of factors including the appointment of Carl Hooper as our High Performance Coach and the re-signing of former state cricketer Hannah Sampson as Women’s Coach,” said club President, Grant Lovelock. “We have had excellent numbers at pre-season training with a number of past players returning to the club including Lewis Hatchett, Ben Twohig, Trent Riddle, Blake Bailey, Tom Joraslafsky and Dean Miller.”

Hannah Sampson will again head up the Women’s Cricket program after a very successful 2018/19 campaign. The Women’s 2nd grade team had a fantastic Grand Final victory over Adelaide University while the 1st grade side finished runner-up to Sturt after pulling off a stunning semi-final victory over Kensington. The club is confident of a strong campaign from the Stingrays women in 2019/20.

The club has a new hard-working committee with fresh faces and new ideas. They have implemented an active sponsorship campaign to support all areas of the club with operating costs associated with ground hire, cricket equipment and coaching resources for player development.
