Safer pedestrian crossings for south coastAlexandrina Council CEO Nigel Morris and Mayor Keith Parkes have welcomed funding for four new pedestrian crossings.

Four new pedestrian crossings will be funded by the state government Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) for Middleton and Goolwa.

The funding of $380,000, provided under the Inner and Middle Adelaide Cycling Improvement Program, will support Alexandrina Council to construct three  pedestrian refuge crossings on Goolwa Road, Middleton, and one crossing facility at the intersection of Hays Street and Porter Street, Goolwa.

The Middleton crossings will include kerb ramps, handrails on both sides of the road and a centre refuge.

The Goolwa crossing facility will include kerb buildouts and ramps on both sides of Hays Street, with an aim to reduce pedestrian crossing distance.

Both projects will also involve upgrades to signage, street lighting and line marking.

pedestrian safety has been a top priority for Middleton and Goolwa communities, especially during the busy holiday periods.

Alexandrina Council Chief Executive Officer Nigel Morris says the new crossings will be a game-changer for Middleton.

“We are thrilled that DIT is further funding the Goolwa pedestrian crossing on Hays Street, Goolwa. Pedestrian movement in this area is particularly busy during peak summer periods, market days and during events held in the Goolwa Wharf Precinct.”

Mayor Keith Parkes says the council has been advocating for a number of years for the much-needed pedestrian crossings.

“The bonus is it’s costing Council nothing, with the State Government providing the funding for this important project.

“Public consultation was undertaken in June 2021, and we thank all those that supported Council in its advocacy of these crossings, particularly the Middleton Town & Foreshore Association.

”The council expects that construction work will start in late 2023. Project updates can be found on its website.
