Safety boost at busy Victor intersection

The City of Victor Harbor will remove the right hand turn onto Hindmarsh Road from Grantley Avenue and Bridge Terrace.

This means the intersection, located near the Victor Harbor Skate Park, will be ‘left in’ and ‘left out’ only (into and out of Hindmarsh Road) as of today, Tuesday 30 January.

The alteration was first discussed as part of the City of Victor Harbor’s Town Centre Traffic Movement and Car Parking Strategy, adopted in 2017.

The change has been implemented on a temporary basis until SteamRanger is in a position to complete an activated level crossing (which has already been approved) for the location.

Signage and traffic management controls will be in place to assist with the change.

City of Victor Harbor Mayor Dr Moira Jenkins says the change will require some adjustment for those who travel in the area regularly, however it’s a necessary alteration.

“I think we can all agree that this particular intersection has caused some headaches – and even some tragedies – in the past.

“It’s very common for cars to bank up across the railway and road at this crossing,” she says.

“In light of recent incidents along the railway, now is a good time to implement the change.

“Particularly with the number of visitors that Victor Harbor attracts, it’s important that our traffic is managed effectively and safety is improved wherever possible.

“Ultimately, we would still like to see the approved activated level crossing constructed in the location, however this is a temporary solution in the meantime.”

The council is liaising with the Rail Infrastructure Manager on when SteamRanger will be in a position for the activated level crossing design to be constructed.
