Sail away on southern waters

After a difficult 2020 Goolwa Regatta Week is on tack for a better 2021, with sails hoisted from 16-24 January.

The Goolwa Regatta Yacht Club (GRYC) has conducted the iconic Milang Goolwa Freshwater Classic since 1974 and expanded the program of events when it launched its Regatta Week in 2012.

The fun starts with the Marina Challenge, from 1-4pm, at Coorong Quays, Hindmarsh Island. Presentations follow at 4.30pm at the Islanders Tavern.

Sunday is picnic day at GRYC, starting with a sandcastle competition from 11am and followed by an open mic on the lawn.

The afternoon sees displays of vintage yachts and radio-controlled yachts, with a presentation at 4.30pm.

Take a picnic lunch to share and enjoy drinks and snacks from the bar – open all day.

It’s sails in the twilight on Friday 22 January, with GRYC hosting the Kies Hardware Dash for Cash from 6pm.

The momentum shifts to the Milang Regatta Club on Saturday 23 January, with a series of races held from 1-3pm and dinner from 6pm.

The highlight of the week, the spectacular Milang Goolwa Freshwater Classic yacht race, will be held on Sunday 24 January after breakfast at the Milang Regatta Club.

From 9am yachts of all shapes and sizes take part in the classic race, followed by presentations at GRYC at 7.30pm.

Yacht racers, casual sailors, families, friends and holidaymakers can all enjoy on and off-water events that make up Goolwa Regatta Week.
